of La Mancha" by Chu
T'ien-Hsin, are clever examples of literature of the Chinese
Vernacular story. The vernacular story is considered the more modern
literature of Chinese writings. In each of these tales, the power of the mind
is a universal theme. In “Diary of a Madman,” a brother has gone insane,
thinking that all people are cannibals. “Sealed Off” is about the wandering
mind of a young woman on a train. Lastly, “Man of La Mancha” tells the tale of
a man mentally planning the details of his death. Each mental state is a bit
different from illness to longing to anxiety respectively. These types of
stories were very different from the words of Confucius.
To
teach high school students about taking
their thoughts captive, we would have a conversation about mental
health. First, I would have the students
describe some of the stressors in their lives, and we would list them on the
board. Next, I would ask for some suggestions on physical and mental ways to
alleviate stress. Finally, we would go through the list of stressors and pair
some of the possible treatments to corresponding stressors. I would also invite
a school psychologist to come into the classroom to discuss specific ways teens
can reach out for mental health services.
Pop
culture, which includes movies, television, video games, music and social media
all affect mental health. Sometimes mental illness is glamorized as in the
Netflix series 13
Reasons Why. As part the student experience I would challenge high
schoolers to a pop culture freeze. I would offer a list of challenges,
including a social media freeze, video game freeze, television/music/movies
freeze. Their parents would be required to sign a verification note, and in
conjunction they would receive a free breathing and yoga class in school to
teach breathing and relaxation techniques.
